Couples Therapy

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • You miss the friendship and closeness you and your partner used to share

  • You’re sick of having the same argument over and over again

  • Your relationship feels like the lowest priority after having kids

  • You’re struggling to trust and heal after an affair

  • Your partner is dealing with trauma or anxiety and it is putting strain on the relationship

  • You are engaged and want to set your marriage up for success

I understand- relationships are hard! Therapy can help.

I utilize the Gottman Method for couples therapy, which means that everything I do in sessions is backed by decades of research on what makes relationships work and why they fail. The Gottman Method focuses on strengthening relationships in many different ways that fall under three categories:

  • How to remain close and intimate as lovers and friends

  • How to manage your conflicts well

  • How to create a life together that is meaningful and purposeful for both of you

I will use targeted, evidence-based interventions to help you see real changes in your relationship. We’ll practice new ways of communication in our sessions together and I’ll send you home with instructions so you can continue using these new tools outside the therapy room. If you’re ready to start seeing positive changes in your relationship, schedule a free consultation call.

Common issues I address in couples therapy:

  • Poor communication

  • Distress and communication issues due to mental health struggles (typically trauma or anxiety)

  • Struggling to agree on major life decisions

  • Parenting stress or preparing to become parents

  • Shared trauma

  • Premarital or pre-engagement counseling

*Please know that I am not a trained custody evaluator and cannot testify in court relating to these matters or about one partner’s mental health state.

Couples Therapy Process

  • The Gottman method requires a comprehensive assessment phase to make sure I have a clear understanding of what’s going on in your relationship. Assessment consists of the following:

-A 75 minute appointment with both partners

-Each partner takes the Gottman Relationship Checkup online

-A 30 minute individual appointment with each partner

-A 75 minute appointment to go over the results of the assessments, discuss a treatment plan, and start therapy

The cost of the assessment phase is $350. This includes both 75 minute sessions, both individual sessions, and the cost of the Gottman Relationship Checkup. I know it sounds like a lot but the information I get from this assessment phase ensures we are targeting the real problems in your relationship so we can see improvements quickly!

  • During the treatment phase of therapy, we will work towards achieving the goals you created. I will teach you skills to help with communication, compromise, and help you deepen your friendship, and increase trust. The length of treatment varies based on goals. I have found that most couples prefer meeting every other week during the treatment phase. Life is so busy and couples often don’t have enough time to practice the new skills they’re learning in between sessions if we are meeting weekly. Sessions are 75 minutes.

  • After you have reached your goals, we will decrease the frequency of our sessions together. We will spend the final few sessions celebrating your progress, and planning how to keep your relationship gains moving forward. While it can be tempting to stop coming to therapy as soon as you see some improvements, this maintenance planning phase is crucial to keep your relationship healthy. It also allows you have to an emergency plan you can enact in case you start to struggle again in the future.
